The scariest moment for me would have to be at the beginning when I started putting charcoal on myself and start walking semi-naked in front of the audience. Initially I was not even sure if I could perform it for 30 minutes. Everyone staring at me made me extremely nervous. I was not sure of my body, hence the first 20 minutes was just my being very conscious but as time passed, I felt something else. I felt numb. Suddenly all the staring did not faze or trouble me. Suddenly, I was sure about what I am doing, I could see everyone but could not hear a thing. It was as if I am in my own space, my own world, completely zoned out, simply performing the piece, overlapping the traces. And finally I had captured myself mentally in that space, where nothing else mattered. Performance made me realise how, in life, it is important to numb a few things out – how we should go on in life, how to mentally envision your inner self. It made me so confident that despite everyone looking or even when no one was there, I continued doing what I wanted, continued it without any fear...

This series of 15 monochromatic paintings explores the duality of black and white, with only two graced by color. The artworks delve into the theme of masks that people wear unknowingly, even alone. Each artwork is a thoughtful dialogue, a silent plea that echoes the sentiment, “Somebody save me, me from myself.” The rich texture and depth of the paintings encourage introspection, making this exhibition a truly engaging and emotionally resonant experience.

Aryan Arora, a visual artist based in Singapore. I prefer to paint bare, real, natural and uninhibited human emotions which when looked at, make the spectator feel, empathetic with the characters in my art. In a world which is full of pretentious people, hiding their real self and walking around wearing masks which aren't visible to the naked human eye; I attempt to bring real emotions and characters who aren't shameful to be mortal and to possess emotions.

Silent Dialogues is more than an exhibition; it is a profound meditation on the human condition. This collection of 15 monochromatic paintings delves into the duality of black and white, exploring the liminal space where the two converge. Only two pieces are graced with colour, symbolising moments of clarity amidst the fog of introspection. The exhibition’s theme centres on the masks we wear—often unknowingly, even when alone. As Arora portrays them, these masks are not just social constructs but also self-imposed barriers that shield us from our true selves. Each painting in this series is a silent plea, a whispered cry for liberation: “Somebody save me, me from myself.” The rich textures and layered depths of these paintings invite viewers to confront their masks to engage in a dialogue with the silence within them...
